David T. Young

David T. Young left us to go meet his maker on August 30, 2016 at the age of 64.

David was born on February 19, 1952 to Harry Randall and Thelma Caroline (Brunk) Young in Bakersfield, Calif. He started his early life to earn money by picking fruit in the fields. He would say, “This taught me the hard knocks of life, what it takes to earn a buck.” From there he took on many jobs until he found his true calling. He worked as a crane operator and belonged to the Operating Engineers Local Union #3 for 36 years. During this he worked for several companies which gave him numerous opportunities to travel throughout the US doing crane work.

David loved to ride motorcycles, which he called his scooters. He had a special scooter which he put together and built when he was a young man. This gave him the freedom to fly with the wind and bugs in his teeth as he would tell you with a big sigh. When David was in his early manhood he became friends with a very special man. Frank, a cowboy/gunsmith and all around great guy, Dave would say. Meeting Frank brought David to a world full of passion in learning ballistics and gun making. He loved to share his knowledge with anyone who wanted to learn.

He would always try to be the best he could in whatever he would do. When he got into clay shooting, he would practice all the time and when he felt ready, he went to nationals and ended up 47th position in his class, which is a feat of great accomplishment. He was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. In 1997, he decided to move to Mont. to have new adventures in the outdoors. This is also where he met his wife Maxie. They hunted and fished and would explore the outdoors together. They shared many memories of the wildlife and outdoors of God’s world. David would say, “This is what life is about, what God has given us.”

As David and Maxie began their life together, their dreams of having a small farm started to grow. A dream that David lived for became a big part of his life in years to come. The pleasure that brought him happiness and love bringing baby calves and lambs into this world, the care and worries that he felt and had. This was David, a man that would be there for people who needed help no matter when and where, he would be there for you with no strings attached, as he would say.

David loved and cherished his family; he will be missed dearly and remembered by many. He is survived by his wife, Maxie; daughter, Sheryl; siblings, Carole Naucke of San Jose, Calif. and Leslie (Carl) Taylor of Elk Grove, Calif.; mother in-law, Lucille Ayers of Glendive; sisters and brother in-law, Nancy (Don) Jarvis of Glendive and Alice Hartman of Clyde Park, Mont. Survivors also include 21 nieces and nephews; 28 great nieces and nephews; 5 great-great nieces and nephew; as well as many cousins, extended family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Thelma Young; sister, Judy Griffith; and brother in-laws, Ted Naucke, John Hartman and Benny Griffith.

Cremation has taken place, memorial services will be held Wednesday, September 7 at 2:00 p.m. at the 7th Day Adventist Church, 109 Clay St.

A Montana son and Army-proud soldier died on September 22, 2016, at Bozeman Health Hospital in Bozeman. David Lee Jones, born August 5, 1947, was also “our son”, “my dad”, “our brother”, and “my husband.”

Born to Anna (Patterson) and Merlin Jones in Glendive, Dave’s childhood was instilled by his parents with values and beliefs that carried him through life.  After high school where he played football, the family moved to Bozeman and Dave went to Montana State University (MSU,) Class of 1969.  He was an ROTC Cadet, and after graduating with a degree in history, began his 26-year Army career at Fort Benning, Ga., that took him throughout the states, South Korea, Germany and Hawaii.  His peers and senior officers recognized him as a soldier’s soldier—Dave’s men and women took precedence over his own interests far ahead of his own life.  Recognition of any kind did not belong to him but to the 21-year old enlisted soldier and the non-commissioned officers who serve our nation and who would give their lives, definitely not to any leaders way behind the lines.  Colonel Jones would tell you this at great length until he had all listeners thoroughly convinced.

Dave loved to chat as Dean, Kone, CSM Hensley and 1SG Jones would all attest.  He talked about basketball, football, who not to vote for at any time in the political cycle, and if you were really lucky, about the Civil War.  One could not meet him without quickly learning that Montana was God’s country; he was a walking, talking Chamber of Commerce for the state.

After retirement in 1994, Dave returned home and was lucky enough to have a mini “homestead.”  He was the ditch rider for Mammoth Ditch, retiring this year, and thoroughly enjoyed the folks he met:  Bob and Blayne, Dick, Rick, and so many others. He mastered woodworking, could build almost anything, and made a couple of hunting knives and black powder rifles from scratch with skills he had learned from his dad.  His library fills bookcases; “Killer Angels” by Michael Shaara his favorite “even if it was fiction.”  Years of hunting turned into simply enjoying his beloved Montana outdoors.

Dave married the late Kathleen Erickson in 1967, and they had one son. He then married the former Hannelore Hohne and divorced in 1980.  He leaves Linda Tilton Jones, whom he married in 1981, now at home in Belgrade.  He is also survived by his parents, Anna and Merlin Jones of Belgrade. His second love was his son, Kelly Michael Jones, and his precious wife, Silvia Garcia Jones; and next were his beloved grandsons, Cole and Zack, who made his days sunny, all of San Diego, Calif.  He is further survived by his sister, Carolyn Robinson and her husband, Larry of Belgrade and their three daughters, Stacy and Kevin Davis of Post Falls, Idaho, and their children, Logan and Natal; Tana and Kevin Frueh of Belgrade and their son, Peyton; and Joy and Bo Davis of Charlotte, N.C., and their children, Jaylen and Jurney.  Dave’s sister, Aneda and husband, Bake Riebeek, also survive him in Arboles, Colo.  Other family members and friends will remember Dave always.

A private funeral service will be held in Glendive.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.  www.dokkennelson.com.

Wilbur James “Bud” Baker died peacefully on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at his home in Fairview surrounded by his family and friends.

A celebration of life service for Bud will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Waterhole in Fairview.

Bud was born on May 21, 1939 in Poplar, Mont. to Eugene and Lucille Baker.  He attended school in Scobey, Mont. where he graduated with the class of 1957. Bud ended his high school days by winning three events in the District High School Rodeo in Scobey. He then went on to win state in bull riding and competed in the National Finals in Albuquerque where he placed in both bull riding and bulldogging.

On June 7, 1959 Bud married Joan Treftz in Richey.  From this union three children were born: Barry, Gary and Leann.

Bud began working for the Montana State Highway Department in 1957. He worked on many bridge projects over the next 16 years in Glasgow, Sidney, Glendive, Great Falls, Ekalaka and Miles City. In 1973 he moved to Richey and took over operation of the family farm. He continued to farm and ranch 3 miles south of Richey until 1997 when he sold the farm, purchased a tractor trailer and finished his working career joining his brother, Richard, at Midnight Trucking in Fargo, N.D.

Bud spent his retirement years in Fairview where he could devote his time to his passion of restoring and repairing old windmills. One of his most recent restorations resides at the Frontier Gateway Museum in Glendive. He enjoyed fishing and spent many days on the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers with friends and family. The highlight of every year was spending elk season up at Taylor Fork with a tight group that shared his love of the mountains and hunting. But if you were new to the group, that was ok, everyone was welcome and treated as family. It was always good to have new ears to hear old stories.

Cowboy, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor and friend… Bud was a lot of things to a lot of people. He was also the definition of tough, but had a gentleness and smile that touched your heart. He always made everyone feel comfortable and welcome.

Bud is survived by his sons, Barry (Charlene) Baker of Odem, Texas and Gary (Stephanie) Baker of Fairview; daughter, Leann (Kevin) Pignone of Libertyville, Ill.;  brothers, Eddy (Clara) and Jerry Baker; and sister, Maxine (Don) Manthei. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lucille Baker; wife, Joan Baker; brothers, Ben and Richard Baker; and grand-daughter, Jeni Carter.

Ernest L. Reynolds, 64, of Powell, Wyo., died Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Spirit Mountain Hospice in Cody, Wyo.

He was born July 29, 1952, in Ardmore, Okla. to Dwayne (Rusty) Reynolds and Alma (Beadle). He graduated from Tioga High School and attended Wahpaton State School of Science. Ernie trained to go into the upholstery business, but after only a few months realized he would be penniless if he continued this path. Meticulous about detail, working on each project took far too long, keeping his profit non-existent.

Ernie married Grace Slehofer, and to this union son Ben Reynolds was born. Ernie drove truck for Suhr Transport for 13 years, and always enjoyed driving. To Ernie, driving was not just reaching the destination, it was the journey there…every town, each mountain, all landmarks and scenery.

In his younger years, Ernie was an avid fisherman and spent many hours perfecting his fly fishing techniques. He enjoyed camping, four-wheeling and hiking. Hiking the Mont. and Wyo. mountains was a favorite pastime of his.

In August 1984, Ernie married Mary Erickson. He not only gained a wife, but also a 13-year-old daughter, Tracy Marie. They lived in Glendive for several years.

After losing eyesight in one eye, Ernie attended Butte Technical Institute and trained to be a machinist. In 1989 the family moved to Powell, where Ernie ran a computer lathe for Weatherford for 21 years. He retired for a period of time and then landed his dream job, which was driving electrical panels to oilfield substations, wind farms or communication centers for Dave Wyman at Specialty Electrics, Inc.

Ernie was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, and fought a superb battle, always with an excellent attitude. Although he was not able to attend granddaughters Kaycee and Logan’s activities, he looked forward to their visits and always talked about their achievements.

Ernie is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary; children, Ben Reynolds of Glendive and Tracy (James) Kern of Shepherd, Mont.; brother, Robert D. (Darlene) Reynolds of Williston, N.D.; nephews, Cole (Tonya) Reynolds, Boone Reynolds and niece, Lonnie (Mike) Iverson, all of Williston; aunt, Ruby Menton of Oklahoma City, Okla.; former wife and life-long friend, Grace Koffler-Evinrude; and many cousins and their extended families. All who loved Ernie take comfort from knowing he is in the loving arms of Christ.

The family requests memorials in Ernie’s name be sent to Hope Lutheran Church, 588 Cary Street, Powell, WY 82435.
